Building Construction and Matereials
Project 1: Famous Architect's Building
In this first project, we were individually tasked to choose and research upon a famous architect of our choosing and a building that they have designed in their career. Were were to focus mainly on the materiality of the building, finding a minimum amount of materials (structural and architectural) and to understand how they were used in the appropriate context of the structure.
I feel that this project was a good introduction to this module, as it had us see materiality and tested our research regarding a new-ish topic. It was interesting to see how different parts of the world would incorporate various materials differently, but also how it will fit with the design intention of the buildings they create.
Project 2: Construction Drawing
For this next project, we were to tackle construction drawings in groups of 6. The task was to research and find a corner-lot terrace house within Malaysia and to use the given drawings by the developers to come up with a set of construction drawings, switching the main material to our given one (concrete -> timber). This also included door, window and stair details. This came alongside a 1:10 sectional model of the chosen house as well.
All in all, I found this project very informative and helpful to my future endeavors as it taught me how to draw different materials and to pay close attention to details. It was quite enjoyable seeing the skills I gained by learning how to draw construction drawings, and also by communicating with new teammates to make the most of our talents.
